Grab the kids, get outside, and go green to celebrate two holidays in one this weekend. The weekend may be a wonderfully long one for you since Boston public schools and many businesses have the Monday, March 17th off to explore the city, and especially South Boston, with their families in honor of both Evacuation Day and St. Patrick’s Day. Throughout the weekend, there will undoubtedly be an activity for every family member to enjoy, so take turns choosing what to do and where to go for days full of active play. This list will help you get started with your festive itinerary for the whole holiday weekend:
- Saturday, the 15th:
- Put some pep in your step at the Faneuil Hall Marketplace with Irish dance performances from 11am to 1pm in the upper rotunda. Hang around the marketplace in the afternoon for a snack at one of the Quincy Market restaurants offering half off certain meals this month, and you’ll be sure to catch some street performers who are out enjoying the spring-like weather.
- Run or walk through your holiday in style with the Hyde Square Task Force’s St. Patrick’s Day themed 5k community run/walk. Join in the fun run for free at 10am starting from Jamaica Plain’s Blessed Sacrament Church at 361 Centre Street.
- Sunday, the 16th:
- Check out the live music and colorful floats the country’s largest parade has to offer with the 600,000 others who arrive to watch on Sunday. The St. Patrick’s Day parade through South Boston starts at 1pm on West Broadway and Dorchester Avenue before winding its way around to the Andrew Square end of Dorchester Avenue.
- Make way for runners in green! The annual St. Patrick’s Day 5k Road Race will be blasting off on its 3.1 mile route from the South Boston Boys and Girls Club at 11am. The race is full, but even if you are not participating, the whole family is welcome to come cheer on your friends and neighbors, and maybe to get inspired to run next year.
- Monday:
- Head to the Boston Children’s Museum today for a St. Patrick’s Day inspired visit, including a mini concert by the Boston Police Gaelic Columns of Pipes and Drums, which starts at 11:30am.
No matter what activities you choose to do this weekend, remember that it is winter’s last one. So let’s make the arrival of spring part of the celebration!
