Staying cool at the pool

As the temperature heats up, you and your family may be looking for a way to stay cool. Luckily, we’re here to tell you how!

Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF) has a network of 35 facilities, 17 of which have free community pools that you and your family can enjoy. Heading to one of these pools can be a great social and bonding activity—not to mention a fun way to exercise. Check out this map to find the one closest to you.

If your child doesn’t know how to swim, summer is a great time to learn. Teaching your child to swim at a young age has great benefits for his or her health. Swimming is a low-impact, non-contact sport—which means it puts less strain on joints and muscles than other forms of exercise—but still has a LOT of physical and social benefits. Swimming improves heart and lung health. It also increases coordination, improves strength and flexibility, and builds stamina. Not to mention, knowing how to swim helps to protect children in a water emergency, which is incredibly important for child safety.

If you and your kid aren’t fans of swimming, there are other activities you can enjoy too. You can play water games, like Marco Polo; learn a new water sport, like water polo; or even take turns jumping and diving into the pool to see who makes the biggest splash.

Whatever water-related activity you choose to do, you’ll definitely be getting a great workout while having a ton of fun. And of course there are lots of nearby beaches  you can explore, too – as close as South Boston and Dorchester. See you in the water!
