With all the good that comes with the change in seasons, like the great exercising weather, delicious fall produce, and fall festivals, there are some downsides as well. There is much less sun to enjoy at this time of year than there was in summer and that can have several effects on your family’s health. While you should always take steps protect your skin in the sun, soaking in some rays every day also helps your body produce vitamin D, improves your mood, and helps you sleep better at night. Experts recommend about 30 minutes of sunlight a day to get all these benefits.
With the sun rising at 7 and going down around 6:30, getting those 30 minutes can be a challenge. With less sun in the morning and the evening, it can be hard to find outdoor time. Try making a few small changes to your day to make sure you and your family are getting outside and enjoying the sun as much as possible. Some ideas are taking a short walk or eating outside at lunch, parking your car a little farther away from your office so you can enjoy a brief walk at the beginning and end of the day, or a mid-afternoon coffee break outside. If possible, walk or bike with your kids to school and have them play outside when they get home from school before the sun goes down. Just 30 minutes of sun a day can have a great impact on your health and mood!
