Boston on ice

As the temperature heads below freezing, the ice skating scene in the Boston metro area explodes with active, holiday cheer that the whole family can enjoy. With so many public rinks in the city and low-cost skate rental at many locations, skaters of all ages and abilities will be gliding through the season in no time. Skating season officially began on November 27 with the opening of all state-run skating rinks, but many are celebrating their reopening this weekend so that families like ours can join in the fun of skating after the first snow. Here are a few of our favorite spots for festive outdoor skating in Boston and Cambridge to put on your to-skate list:

  • Boston common Frog Pond – the city’s most famous ice skating rink bustles with skaters of all ages from 10am to 9pm almost every day during the winter. Families who want to circle the ice and enjoy the view of the country’s oldest public park lit up with tree lights (just like in the photo above) are in for a treat with FREE admission for children ages 13 and under.
  • Boston Harbor Hotel – skate under the hotel’s famous rotunda with beautiful views of the wharf and city skyline all season long. Young skaters will especially enjoy the free festivities like skating with Santa at the Winter on the Wharf Season Opener Celebration happening THIS SATURDAY from 1 to 4pm.
  • Kelly Rink in Jamaica Plain – a hop, skip, and a jump away from the orange line’s Stonybrook T station, this rink is free for everyone to use and offers skate rentals for only $2. Now that is cheap, convenient, AND close – what could be better?
  • Kendall Square – Give this Cambridge rink a test skate for free between 11am and 9pm during “Holiday on Ice” THIS SATURDAY. Just be sure to stick around for the professional skating show starting at 2pm – you won’t want to miss watching former Olympians in action.
  • Even more – Visit the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) website to search for even more DCR skating rinks in Boston.
